The 7th Mini Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games organized at the University of Cape Coast under the distinguish patronage of Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah (Vice Chancellor, UCC) with Osabirima Kwesi Attah II, Omahene of Oguaa Traditional Council as the Guest of Honour has come to a thrilling end.

The Games, sponsored by Promasidor Ghana, America Student Athlete Logistics (ASAL) and UCC Enterprises started from the 3rd of January, 2017 and came to a climax on the 13th of January, 2017.

This year’s event under the theme University Sports: A unifier for post-election Ghana”, had eight public universities, namely, University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) , University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University of Development Studies (UDS) , University of Mines and Technology (UMAT), University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Energy and National resources (UNER) and host University of Cape Coast (UCC) showcasing their finest athletes to be selected for the International Federation of Universities Sports (FISU) Games in Chinese Taipei.

The disciplines involved in the games are Basketball (Men), Football (Male and Female), Goal Ball (Male and Female), Netball (Female), Table Tennis (Male and Female) and Tennis (Male and Female).

ACCREDITATION

 

 

 

 

 

To ensure the eligibility of all participants, all institution upon arrival at the games village had their athletes screened and duly accredited.

 

OPENING CEREMONY

After arrival and accreditation, the games begun with a mega opening ceremony at the new Cape Coast Stadium on January 5, 2017. Some activities that took place on the day included a march-Past by contingents, hoisting of games flag, lighting of games flame, swearing of games oath by athletes and officials, a women soccer match between UCC and UG and 1500m male and female race during the recess.  

Present at the games were Professor Joseph K. Ogah (President, GUSA), Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah (Vice Chancellor, UCC), Osabirima Kwesi Attah II (Omahene of Oguaa Traditional Council) and his entourage, heads of the various institutions, athletes, officiating officials, representatives from Cowbell, UCC Enterprises and ASAL as well as members of the Local Organizing Committee. Side attraction was the Obrempon folkloric cultural troupe and U.P.S Regimental Band from Cape Coast.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah (Vice Chancellor, UCC) applauded all students for their ability to combine and excel in sports and academics.

“I always say the best student is the one who is able to combine academics ad sports and is able to excel in both, I believe you true gallant sports men  and women are all potential best students in your various institution because you are combining sports and academics. All you need is to excel in both and that makes you the best student of your institution” – Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah (Vice Chancellor, UCC)

The Games in perspectives

GOAL BALL

This year’s Goal Ball Competition was patronized by 3 male and female teams – UG, UCC and UEW. The competitions was played on an all play all bases with every team playing two matches

Athletes’ and Team Performance

Generally, the players performed very well and were disciplined both on and off the field of play. UCC won the male competition while UG won the female division.

Netball

In netball, 6 Institutions participated this year. The participating Institutions included

  • UG
  • UCC
  • KNUST
  • UEW
  • UNER
  • UPSA

In groups of three, UCC, UEW and UNER were seeded in group A and UG, UPSA AND KNUST were seeded in group B.  After matches in the groups, UEW, UCC, UG and KNUST qualified to play in the semifinal. After the semis, UEW and UCC qualified to the finals after winning against KNUST and UG respectively

Athletes and Team Performance

Generally, the performance was good. The athletes put in their best. UEW took the first position. UCC came second (2nd) followed by UG in the 3rd position and KNUST in the 4th position.

BASKETBALL

7 Institutions participated in Basketball at the 7 mini GUSA Games. The participating Institutions were Group A; UG, UNER and UDS and Group B; UCC, KNUST, UEW and UPSA

After lots of action and trills in the group stages, UDS, UCC, UG and KNUST qualified to play in the semifinal. After the semis, UG and UCC qualified to the finals defeating KNUST and UDS respectively in the process

Athletes and Team Performance

The level of play was superb. UG took the first position. UCC came second (2nd) followed by UDS in the 3rd position and KNUST in the 4th position.

FOOTBALL

Male

In Male football, all eight public institutions were ably represented.  UCC, UENR, KNUST and UDS locked horns in Group A whiles UEW, UPSA, UMAT AND UG battled for supremacy in Group B.

With matches in the group stages over, it was UCC, KNUST, UPSA and UEW who qualified from their respective groups.

In female division, five institution – UCC, UG, UEW, UDS and KNUST competed, The competitions was played on an all play all bases with every team playing four matches.

Team Performance

In the men finals, four time champions, UCC were over throne by KNUST to annex the trophy. UEW came third followed by UPSA.

Contrary to that of the male competition, UCC won the female division. They were followed by UEW, UDS, UG and KNUST in that order.

Athletics

 

The 7th mini GUSA Athletics competition took place from the 10th – 11th of January 2017. This year’s event had all institutions participating for laurels and honor.

General Performance

This year’s performances were very impressive and above par as long standing records were broken. Some notable records broken included female 800m, female 400 m, male 100m, female 4×100 m, male high jump to mention a few.

In all, UCC annexed the highest number of medals followed by UG and UEW.

Table Tennis

The Table Tennis Competition took place at the UCC gymnasium from 6th January, to 9th January, 2017. At the end, UCC emerged the overall winners in both the male and female division.                                                                                .

Tennis

Tennis this year was keenly contested.  UEW, Charles Abobila however came out tops in the male division. In the female division, UG’s Naa Shika Adu also won the Ultimate.

Badminton

In Badminton, Team UCC swept all the medals in the male division however in the female division, they lost the gold to UEW,

Closing Ceremony and Award Presentation

After 10 days of non-stop action, January 12, 2017 was set aside for the closing ceremony and award presentation. Cowbell Ghana, sponsored the event with its product to add color to the event.

At the closing ceremony, Professor Joseph K. Ogah (President, GUSA) thank all stakeholders for making the program a success. He then announced the respective position of all institutions that took part in the 7th mini GUSA Games. See the results below.
