UCC & UG defend respective titles after winning 2023 GUSA Cross Country race

University of Cape Coast (UCC) and University of Ghana (UG) stole the headlines but 2022 National Cross Country winners, William Amponsah and Lariba Juliana Sakat were the top performers in this year’s Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Cross Country which was held on 1st April, 2023.

University of Education (UEW) won gold in the men’s category and also, conquered the women’s race at the just ended National Cross Country held at University of Ghana.

William Amponsah from the central region, representing UEW, put up a spirited performance to beat his colleagues to clinch gold in the men’s category in a time of 30 mins 50 sec.

Arthur Ismeal of UG clocked 31 min 03 sec to finish second while Bassit Afful of UG came third in the men’s race with a time of 31 min 13 sec.

For the women division; the usual suspect, Lariba Juliana Sakat of upper east region representing UEW overcame a tight challenge to emerge winner of that race with a time of 36 min 52 sec.

Naomi Addo of UG followed closely, finishing the race with a time of 37 min 59 sec while Juana Aslaki Yaaba (UCC) finished in 38 min 46 sec to place third in the women’s race.

In the end, University of Cape Coast (UCC) was adjudged the overall GUSA champion in the female race with 42 points. UEW came second with 96 points and University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) finished third with 126 points.

Also, UG won the men’s race with 60 points. UEW picked silver with 70 points with UCC winning bronze with 85 points.

The symbolic starting gunshot which signaled the athletes into action was done by GFA President Kurt Okraku, who was present as the special guest
